McDelivery® Speed Camera Ads

The first ad in a speed camera ticket

One moment of inattention, and… FLASH! In Hamburg, nearly 3,000 drivers get caught by speed traps every day. In Germany’s speed camera capital, your driver’s license is at greater risk than almost anywhere else in the country.

If you were driving way too fast, you can expect to get your license suspended. And no driver’s license means no drive-thru at McDonald’s. The easiest alternative to McDrive®: McDelivery®.

But how can we make speeders aware of our delivery service?

How we photobombed Hamburg’s speed cameras

Our idea was as simple as it was brilliant: we used speeding tickets as promotional mailers for McDelivery®.

In a guerrilla marketing campaign, we “hijacked” several speed cameras in Hamburg for one day. To do this, we placed posters and banners precisely within the frame of the selected speed cameras.

Our clear message: Driving ban? Luckily, there’s McDelivery®.

Now all we had to do was wait and watch as our advertising campaign unfolded on its own and, a few weeks later, was mailed out by the authorities – free for us.

A speeding ticket goes viral

One speeder posted his speed camera photo featuring our ad on Reddit, and it went viral: With over 420,000 views and 3,200 upvotes in less than 24 hours, our guerrilla campaign ranked #1 in one of Germany’s major subreddits. That’s how we achieved impressive reach without spending a single cent of media budget.
